Still, Medieval II is a good game, but it's a good thing you bought it in sale. If you want to play a decent total war, choose either Napoleon total war, Shogun 2, Attila or Warhammer if you are into fantasy. Napoleon is different in that it's a gunpowder game. There is a very vocal melee conservative anti-gunpowder segment in the total war.

- Rome: Total War was by far, the biggest leap Creative Assembly did with its franchise. It was released in 2004 just two years after the 2.5D texture sprites of the first Medival and it revolutionized strategy games. It was the first Total War game to have full 3D graphics that can handle battles on a Maximillian scale.
- Medieval 2 came out more than seven years ago, but to many fans (myself included) it still holds up very well today, and is easily considered a high point of the series. It also was the last 'old' Total War game released, before many mechanics were changed and overhauled with Empire.
- If as your post suggests you have never played Rome: Total War (that is 'Rome 1') it should be considered mandatory before you even think about medieval 2 or Rome II. Seriously, forget the others, get Rome 1 and get downloading mods for it - you're in for one hell of a lot of fun. It's true, I haven't played Rome 1.
Factions in Medieval II: Total War
There are twenty-two factions in Medieval II: Total War. In the Grand Campaign game seventeen factions are playable. Of these, only England, France, the Holy Roman Empire, Spain, and Venice are available from outset. The other playable factions may be unlocked all at once by winning a campaign (short or long) as one of the five initially available factions. Alternatively, they can be unlocked, one at a time and regardless of whether the campaign is won or not, by conquering all their settlements (including occupied temporary forts) or by killing their entire royal family.
